Abstract - The Information Society 5(1)

The Information Millennium

J J Fitzsimmons

The 3rd millennium will be an era in which information is the key strategic resource. The information industry must have the foresight to lead the change through strategic visions and planning. As technological advances in information continue, the industry will become less technology-driven and more market-driven. Traditional business boundaries will blur as the definition of information industry expands to include all companies that are involved in the generation, packaging, and distribution of information. Better and cheaper technology, as well as interoperability of equipment, will aid the growth of both institutional and home applications. Policy issues that will play an important role in shaping the future of society include: 1. privacy protections, 2. the role of government, 3. intellectual property rights, and 4. information literacy.
